What is Oxytocin
Oxytocin is a nonapeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary, with peripheral actions in childbirth and lactation and central actions in social behavior, bonding, and sexual response. Injectable and intranasal forms are approved for induction of labor and control of postpartum hemorrhage. Interest in intranasal formulations for social cognition is the subject of clinical research.

- •In obstetric use: uterine hyperstimulation, hypotension, tachycardia, and, with high doses/volumes, water intoxication/hyponatremia. Intranasal: generally mild (nasal irritation, headache).
Contraindications
- •Cephalopelvic disproportion, fetal distress, specific obstetric contraindications, and hypersensitivity. Caution in cardiac patients and with the risk of water intoxication.
