What is Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is a synthetic 39-amino-acid peptide, the first and only approved dual agonist of the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. The GIP+GLP-1 synergy is supra-additive: the GIPR receptor in the hypothalamus contributes to appetite suppression independently of GLP-1R. In the SURMOUNT-1 study (NEJM 2022), 15 mg/week produced a 20.9% reduction in body weight over 72 weeks.
