What is VIP

VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon superfamily, with immunomodulatory, vasodilatory, and anti-inflammatory action via VPAC1/VPAC2 receptors. It regulates cytokines, improves pulmonary endothelial function, and modulates chronic inflammatory responses, and is used in the Shoemaker protocol for CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome). The Aviptadil formulation has been studied in clinical trials for acute respiratory failure.

Side effects

•Facial flushing, transient drop in blood pressure, tachycardia, diarrhea, and discomfort at the application site. Vasodilatory effects may be pronounced at systemic doses.

Contraindications

•Hypotension, unstable cardiovascular disease, pregnancy, and lactation. Use only under specialized medical supervision (CIRS protocol).
